A New Year Thank You

Dear Customers,

Happy New Year! Thanks to you, our wine shop finished 2024 strongly. We are extremely grateful that you stayed with us throughout the year.

We plan on keeping the good vibes going with always-interesting wines, (almost) weekly tastings, special pre-orders, and plenty of communication as the year rolls out. More fun!

2024 was a landmark year for stores such as ours. Honestly, after Proposition 125 passed, allowing wine in grocery stores, we really did not know what to expect. After the change, I was shopping in a Safeway, and I watched a man walk in, grab a basket, walk by the wines they had placed by the entrance . . . then slowly turn around, grab a bottle, and continue into the store.

I thought to myself: “And that’s how it happens. It’s a Monday afternoon, I’m in a hurry, what’s the harm in grabbing a bottle while I’m here?”

The New Year brings a stark Denver Gazette article outlining the harm.

It’s not only retail stores that are feeling the heat. Breweries and distributors — some small and some not so small — also have closed their doors.

So thank you! Thank you for browsing, buying, chatting, tasting, letting us serve you, and keeping us going. A neighborhood wine shop is a place to pick up just the right bottle for dinner, take a gift to a friend, or wander around for a minute. And when you’re attached to a grocery store, even better!

Barbara Macfarlane, owner of Marczyk Fine Foods, is always happy when she gets asked to talk about a favorite wine or spirit. "So many wines, so little time. So like our customers, I depend on the crew to tell me what's new, delicious, and noteworthy. It's true, I get stuck on faves, but the new wines coming in the door are so well chosen! So drink up Denver, we've been doing this for 20 years and we know what's cool!"
