Modat Le Petit Mod’Amour Blanc & Modat Le Petit Mod’Amour Rouge
Upon founding Domaine Modat (a modest 23 hectares of vines found in the French commune of Cassagnes in the Agly Valley) in 2007, Philippe Modat has worked the vines organically (achieved certification in 2014) and biodynamically (not yet certified), and having returned to working as a lawyer he has left control of the winery in the safe hands of his dynamic and hard-working sons (all, by the way, under the age of 30).
The vineyards themselves are composed predominantly of well-drained gneiss, in which grow indigenous red and white Roussillon varieties, including 115-year-old Carignan. In the last 10 years they have built a modern carbon-neutral winery and embraced biodynamic viticulture, working with restrained extraction, fermentation on wild yeasts, and as little sulphur as possible.
Modat Le Petit Mod’Amour Blanc is a blend of Muscat, Viognier, Roussanne, and Grenache Blanc. Concentrated nose of ripe yellow peach, vanilla, and honeysuckle. The palate is soft and luscious and makes you think of peach, mango and pear. There is baking spice (vanilla, cloves and cinnamon) on the finish, which lingers for quite a while. Pair with asparagus, grilled salmon, and tarragon chicken.
Modat Le Petit Mod’Amour Rouge is a blend of Syrah, Grenache, and Carignan. Aromas of wild berries, currants, cocoa nibs, and a subtle hint of fresh coffee. The body is concentrated and silky but still lively, with fantastic acidity and a subtle leathery tone. The tannins are super-smooth, and there’s a lovely bitter, smoky note lingering at the end. Pair with beef, roasted veggies, and lamb ragu.
